Young Broadcasters Win Awards
By MICHELE GLANCE
The Bloomfield Hills school district has two reasons to be proud of its student radio station.
Eleven Bloomfield Hills students recently won awards from the Michigan Association of Educational Broadcasters. If that isn’t reason enough to celebrate, the student radio station is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
The student awards winners were recognized at the April 8 Bloomfield Hills Board of Education meeting.
“I’m really pleased to recognize all of these students,” said Pete Bowers, a Bloomfield Hills district teacher and the general manager of the student radio station. “They’ve worked really hard to earn these awards, and it’s a reflection of all the hard work they’ve put into working at the station.”
Three students won state broadcasting awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters at the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference: Andy Rontal, Andover senior, won first place, Promotional Announcement; Julie Rosenthal, Andover senior, received first place, Newscast; and John Rappaport, Andover junior, received third place, Newscast.
Eight students won nine other awards at the broadcasting conference.
Jeremy Gans, Andover senior, won the Silver Mic -- Promotional Announcement and a Bronze Mic -- Promotional Announcement; Adam Allenberg, Andover senior, won the Silver Mic -- Promotional Announcement; Nora Goudsmit, Andover senior, won the Silver Mic -- Promotional Announcement; Rosenthal won the Silver Mic -- Newscast; Craig Lassner, Lahser junior, won the Silver Mic -- Newscast; Lauren Sosin, Andover senior won the Bronze Mic -- Newscast; Kim Burcar, Andover senior; won the Bronze Mic -- Newscast; Rappaport won the Bronze Mic -- Sportscast.
The student radio station is known by the call letters WBFH, and its slogan is “Twenty Years of Rockin’ the Hills.”
